Household Four-Stream Weight Data

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Household Four-Stream
Weight Data?

Simply, a per-kilo weight record for each of the four streams of waste and recycling produced by a household.

Dynamic bin weigh technology has now progressed such that bin weighing systems are a cost effective option for residential waste vehicles - both side and rear loaders.

Local Councils in Australia can now gain access to Household Four-Stream Weight Data with a combination of cost effective bin weighing systems and RFID tag fitted residential bins,

How is it collected?

Waste collection trucks fitted with dynamic bin weigh systems are able to measure and record the per-kilo weight of a household's waste and recycling stream, without stopping, pausing or slowing the bin collection and emptying process.

RFID tags fitted to waste bins, or GPS data, are used to connect waste/recycling stream weight records to individual households.

Complete Household Four-Stream Weight Data can then be made available Local Councils by the manufacturer of the dynamic bin weigh system, or the waste collection service provider.

What can you do with it?

Household behaviour change for waste and recycling management will play a significant role in achieving the goals and targets set out by Victoria’s circular economy plan, Recycling Victoria: A new economy.

For Local Councils seeking to engage and educate households on waste and recycling management practice and performance, Household Four-Stream Weight Data provides capability to:

    • Shifts in waste and recycling stream weight - are food organics shifting from landfill to FOGO bins?

    • Are there differences between demographics or locations?

    • Is our FOGO bin education strategy achieving behaviour change?

    • What explains differences between demographics and locations?

    • Educate & engage - use evidence based education and engagement programs to provide residents.

    • Encourage & empower - utilize ‘Nudge’ style household comparative performance. Provide residents with the best services and opportunities possible to recover materials.

    • Experiment - A/B test education and engagement strategies.

    • Service Optimisation - what’s the optimal collection frequency for the glass stream?

How much does it cost?

Elektrika has priced our dynamic bin weigh system such that you should expect the overall installed cost to be comparable to traditional on-board scales for measuring the weight of the load in the compactor.

Reach out to your service provider or truck manufacturer for specific pricing on Elektrika’s dynamic bin weighing system - Dyna.

Has this been implemented in Australia?

Wyndham City Council, Victoria

From December 2020, Wyndham City Council in Victoria has 23 trucks fitted with dynamic bin weigh systems operating as a part of Cleanaway’s waste collection service provision.

A key focus area of Wyndham’s Smart City Strategy 2019-2024 is innovation for smart waste and environmental solutions. Priorities include promoting, developing and implementing innovative initiatives that increase recycling and reuse of waste, and implement international best practice in smart waste management systems and technology.

The Micro Level Waste Collection Reports project is a large innovation, environment and sustainability initiative within Wyndham’s Smart City Implementation Plan. The project’s goal is to analyse, interpret, present and share waste collection data at the household level to encourage and educate citizens on local waste and recycling management practices and performance.

A detailed case study is in the works and will be made available on request.
