Household-level Waste Stream Weight Data

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Household-level Waste Stream Weight Data?

A per-kilo weight record for each stream of waste produced by a household within a local council area.

How are those data collected and made available?

Dynamic bin weigh systems fitted to waste collection trucks measure and record the per-kilo weight of a household's waste stream, without stopping, pausing or slowing the bin collection and emptying process.

RFID tags fitted to waste bins, or GPS data, are used to connect waste stream weight records to individual households.

Complete Household-level Waste Stream Weight Data is then made available by the manufacturer of the dynamic bin weigh system, or the waste collection service provider.

What might Local Councils do with those data?

Household waste management behaviour change will play a significant role in achieving the goals and targets set out by Recycling Victoria and the new Waste Act & Authority.

For Local Councils seeking to engage and educate households on waste management practice and performance, Household-level waste Stream Weight Data provides capability to:

  1. Analyse - uncover patterns and trends.

    • Waste stream weight shifts - are food organics shifting from landfill to FOGO bins?

    • Are there differences between demographics or locations?

  2.  Interpret & Investigate - what explains those patterns and trends?

    • Is our FOGO bin education strategy achieving behaviour change?

    • What explains differences between demographics and locations?

  3. Take informed action -

    • Educate & Engage - provide tailored education and engagement programs for residents.

    • Encourage & Empower  - provide ‘Nudge’ style household comparative performance, like those found on utility bills.

    • Experiment - A/B test education and engagement strategies.
